THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST
Directed by Mel Gibson
Review by Rev. Andrew D. WilliamsI & my wife viewed this movie on the 27th of February. This movie depicts the suffering of Christ like no other I have seen in my life. The word passion means suffering so when anyone decides to go to see this movie they can understand just how much the Lord Jesus Christ loved people to go through such suffering to save their soul from hell. I recommend all Christians go to this moving with the exception of young children and the very elderly that might have a serious medical condition. I also recommend that Christians take their unsaved friends and be ready to minister the Gospel to them after the movie.
I would like to take a moment to tell you of a vision I was given in December of 1982 concerning the suffering of our Savior Jesus Christ. Let me also state that this is the only vision I ever had to date. I was saved in 1981 and in 1982 the bottom fell out of my life. My job which had been stable became very unstable. Everything that could go wrong seemed to. October 2nd of 1982 someone broke into our home and pilfered it. My wife and I went out for two hours to the home of Christian friends, when we arrived back home to find the door ripped of its hinges and many of our earthly possessions gone. On Thanksgiving Day 1982 my then 63 year old father had a massive coronary right in front of me. He survived and had several strokes the first part of December 1982. Just prior to Christmas that year I went to bed early one night to pray and seek the Lord. I was deeply hurt because of everything that had occurred; I wanted to know where God was in all of this. When I closed my eyes I had the sensation of moving, immediately I opened my eyes and found my self in my room, I closed my eye again and the same thing happened I then sat up on the edge of the bed and the Spirit of God said to me look and learn. Immediately I was standing on Calvary the day my Lord was being crucified. What I saw is hard to put into words. I saw Christ on the cross, I saw Him suffering and dying for the sins of the world. He was so beaten that He hardly resembled a man. His crown of thorns look more like a helmet of thorns to me, matted hair hardened with blood. The spikes which to me looked like railroad spikes had been driven through His wrists and feet. The Romans never tied you to the cross they drove the spikes through the wrists, the hard bones and cartilage will not give under the weight of a human being. He was totally naked. His flesh was cut to ribbons. The scourge they portrayed in the movie that was ripping His flesh into strips was how the Romans scourged in that era. A man dying by crucifixion would pull up with his arms and push up on the spike in his feet to get a breath. Crucifixion allowed to be carried out to term would cause death to come by suffocation, it was a process that took about three days for a healthy person but Jesus had already been scourged as well as severely beaten, within six hours He was dead. While I stood in front of the cross the Lord picked up His eyes and looked at me, I was immediately filled with His love and well being, such comfort that I still cannot place into mere words. What He was saying to me in the vision was (paraphrased) “if I loved you this much why is it you think I am the cause of your suffering now?” Our God is doing all He can to bless us and to heal us and set us free from the lies and hurts of the devil. God is not causing the pain of mankind; Satan is (read the book of Job).
This movie was truly a memorial to the suffering (passion) of Christ. Mel Gibson is a man of great conviction that should be applauded for caring enough to show humanity the truth of God’s love for all people. Hollywood critics should be ashamed of themselves for their harassment of Mr. Gibson. When they watch this movie they need to realize Jesus was paying the price for their sins as well.
I must also comment on one more thing. The small parts that portrayed Satan and demons as creatures provoking people to evil is a great Scriptural truth. Mankind has much help engineering evil against God and his fellow man. The devil is always behind evil, sickness and disease, sin and every malady man has or will experience. We all have the right to choose to obey God or the devil. What the devil engineered that faithful day on Calvary backfired on him and blessed all people that receive Christ.
If you have not received Jesus Christ ask Him into your heart today.
